David Hough was born April 15, 1821 in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.  He was baptized Aug 5, 1821 .  His parents are Joseph Hough and Magdalena (Polly) Waltz (Source) Hope Lutheran Church Hoffman's South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., Parish Records 1782-19115 by Paul Miller Ruff.  By the way,  David had another family.  His first wife died in 1850.  He had three children with her.  I don't know if you are interested in them or not.

Nancy

PS:  The Huntingdon is actually spelled with a d not a t like you would think.

Dear Al,  There have been two books written on the Hough Family which I have:  Hough Genealogy by Elmer Hough (1936) ( I purchased this from The Higginson Book Company, Salem, MA 01970, ph: 978-745-7170 for less than $20.00)  The other one is:  The Boyd Family by Scott Lee Boyd which you can purchase from the same company for around $50.00.  They are both excellent, well worth the money.  I also have one on the Waltz family, but do not know where you can get that one.

I want to tell you that the Houghs are of German decent.  The first 8 pages of the Hough Genealogy by Elmer Hough is incorrect and that Jacob Hough is not a descendant of Richard Hough of England . It is believed that our Hough's came from Frederick County, MD to PA.  START WITH THE FAMILY OF Jacob Hough and Charlotte Smith on page 8.  I have talked to several professional genealogist and they all agree that the author, Elmer Hough got off the tract at this point.(backward)

I have found some errors but that is to be expected by any of us who have been doing genealogy for any time period.  No matter how hard we try, there is always something.  So, keep my note if you plan to buy the above books.

Now to answer you question on David's parents and first wife.

His parents:  Joseph Hough b. March 29, 1780 in Westmoreland Co., PA d. December 7, 1846 in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.  He married Magdalena (Polly) Waltz abt 1802, b. Apr 18, 1781 in Waltz Mills, Fayette Co., PA d. Jan 1, 1842 in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.
There children:
1. Daniel Hough
2. Sarah H. (Sallie) Hough
3. Capt. John Hough
4. Maria (Mariah) Hough
5. Solomon Hough
6. Joseph Hough
7. Jacob Hough
8. Charlotte Hough
9. David Hough  (your grandfather)
10. Paul Hough

then Joseph Hough married Nancy Finley bet. 1842-1848  b. Oct 31, 1799 in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA d. December 9, 1871 Westmoreland Co., PA.   When Nancy Finley married Joseph Hough she was a widow.  Her first husband was William Bell.  Nancy Finley and William Bell are the parents of David Hough's (your grandfather) first wife, Nancy Bell.  (Are you confused yet?)

David Hough married Nancy Bell b. Sept 4, 1824 in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA d. August 8, 1850 .  She is buried in Sewickly Church Cemetery, Westmoreland Co., Pa.

David and Nancy 's children are:

1.Theodore Benton Hough b. Sept 5, 1843 in West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA.
(He moved to bef. 1870, Corwin Twp., Logan Co., Illinois . I found him in 1870 census living with the James Powers family but have nothing else on him.

2. Joseph B. Hough b. Sep 9, 1845   West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA.  d, July 24, 1859.He is buried in Sewickley Church Cemetery, Westmoreland Co., Pa.

3. Josephine B. Hough b. abt 1847  (See note below)

4. William B. Hough b. May 20, 1848 West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA d. Oct 7, 1868 .

If you look at the 1860 census PA, Westmoreland Co., PA, p. 1231
Hough, Nancy 58  (this is your grandfather's (David) mother-in-law and his first wife Nancy's mother.
Bell , William 30  (Nancy Finley's son by first husband)
Hough, Theodore B. 16
            Josephine B. 13
            William B. 10

Apparently she raised her daughter's and son in laws children after Nancy died.

On Josephine Hough, I have seen her listed several places as being the child of  Joseph Hough and Nancy Finley Bell Hough.  However, she would have been too old to have a child b. in 1847.  I really believe she is the Josephine (3rd child of David Hough and Nancy Bell)

Josephine F. (Josie) Hough b.Nov 23, 1847 West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA
d. Sept 8, 1871 md. J. Logan Brown on August 23, 1869.
Children of J. Logan Brown and Josephine Hough
1. Nancy R. Brown, b. Nov 17, 1869 Westmoreland Co., PA. d. Dec 25, 1870 Westmoreland Co., PA

2. Anne E. Mae Brown b. July 3, 1871 Westmoreland Co., md Franklin L. (Frank) Gress abt. 1892.  He was born February 1859 PA.

My notes:  She has no children.  In 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 living in Southwest Greensburg , Westmoreland Co., PA.

I found your grandparents David Hough and Amanda Guffy and children in 1860 census, living in Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny County , PA.   Then in 1870 and there-after in Perry Twp., Noble Co., IN.  You probably already know that.

If you can give me any additional info on your family.  I would appreciate it.  Ancestry makes it difficult since they no longer let you put in living people.

If I can help you in any way, let me know.  Hope I did not make any typo errors.

Dear Al,  I found David Hough and Nancy in 1850 PA Census, Westmoreland Co., West Newton , p. 276.   Josephine is not listed as one of their children so.  Guess I am wrong about that.  I just do not know who she is now. .  I guess I will just keep looking.  So, don't list her as one of David and Nancy (Bell ) Hough's children.  Sorry about that.

Nancy ,

I have been concerned that none of David Hough's children with Nancy Bell are listed in the 1860 census record. If Nancy died, the children should still have been with David.

I think I found Nancy Bell Hough and the children in 1860, living with the Bell family.

Did you have any other information to tie the two David Hough's together?
