1. Peter Cloyes I - was born about 1539 in Clois, France and died in 1576 in Colchester, Essex, England .
Peter married Ellen Hollandt in 1563. She is the daughter of John Hollandt.

Peter - The name Clyes is frequent in Devon, England. There is a Cloise, France. (Genealogical History of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont) The name is also spelled CLOYSE, CLAYES, CLOYE, CLOICE. From the records of Saint Nicholas Parish, Colchester, England as given by the Rev. Canon M. M. Martin, M. A. of St. James Rectory, East Hill, Colchester, England. Peter Cloyse was a member of St. Nicholas Parish in early 1500.
 
He apparently came over from France during the Flemish immigration. (info provided by Tom Cloyes from "Cloyes and Dagwell Family Genealogies" by Mrs. F. H. Obetz, July 1972, in his possession) Cloyes-sur-le-Loir is a village southwest of Paris. In the "artist district" of Paris there is a Cloys Hotel and a Rue de Cloys. This area can be located on a map and is north of the river.
 
There is also Cloyes-sur-Marne which is east of Paris, and is a very small village. In 1212 Stephen of Cloyes, then aged 12, led the Children's Crusade.
 
The Cloyes name can also be traced to Lincolnshire, England in the 1500's.

2. Peter Cloyes II - was chr. on 28 Jun 1567. He is the son of Peter Cloyes I and Ellen Hollandt.
Peter married Elizabeth before 1600 in Colchester, Essex, England.

ii.  John Cloyes III was chr. on 2 Dec 1604 and died in 1676 in Cumberland, Maine . See #3. below.
iii.  Peter Cloyes was chr. in 1606.

3. John Cloyes III - was chr. on 2 Dec 1604 and died in 1676 in Cumberland, Maine . He was the son of Peter Cloyes II.
John married Abigail Mournings on 12 Oct 1635 in Woolverstone, Suffolk, England. She died before 1656 in Watertown, Middlesex, Mass. .
  Then John married Jane.

John - May 3, 1656; For 30 pounds, sold Watertown house 'where my late mansion house was by God's providence burnt down' along with interest in the meeting house, to Samuel Stratton. Wife Jane released dower to the Watertown property . Bought house, barn and marsh land near 'the neck' in Charlestown, MA. In 1676 he was living on the west sideof the Penobscot River - killed in Indian attack. (The Cloyes Family; Savage's) The inventory of the "estate of John Clay deceased, being a fisherman and mariner, killed by the Indians" is on file together with papers of Administration of his estate, saidAdministration granted to one William Wood. i.  John Cloyes IV was born on 26 Aug 1638 in Waterton, Mass and died in 1713 in Wells, Maine . See #4. below.
ii.  Nathaniel Cloyes was born on 6 Mar 1642/1643 in Watertown, MASS and died after 1722 in Wells New York . See #5. below.
iii.  Abigail Cloyes was born in 1644 in Waterton, Mass.

iv.  Sarah (1) Cloyes was born about 1646 in Waterton, Mass.

Sarah - married Peter Housing, June 20, 1673

In a petition to Governor Andros for confirmation of title, says, that his father Peter Housing, was possessed of one hundred and twenty acres westside of Presumpscot river, that he was killed before the Indian war, and his family forced from there, and since his widow has sold one half to Gustian John, a Frenchman.

v.  Hannah Cloyes was born about 1650 in Waterton, Mass and died after 1735 in Scarborough, Maine .

Hannah - married Edward Hounsell who died in 1690. Then married Isaac Hallam of Boston who died in 1722 - 2 children.
vi.  Peter Cloyes was born on 27 May 1640 in Waterton, Mass and died on 18 Jul 1708 in Sudbury, Mass .
Peter married Hannah Littlefield. Hannah was born in 1633 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England. She was the daughter of Edmund Littlefield and Annis (Agnes) Austin. She died in Wells,ME .

Peter - and Hannah had 7 children.
 
He married (2) Sarah Towne Abt. 1682 in Salem, Essex Co.,Massachusetts daughter of William Towne and Joanna Blessing. He married (3) Susannah Harrington January 02, 1703/04 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. daughter of Robert Harrington and Susannahgeorge.
vii.  Thomas Cloyes was born in 1656 in Waterton, Mass and died in 1690 in Falmouth, Maine .

Thomas - married Susannah Lewis (son of George Lewis). She moved to Salem, Ma. after Thomas was killed by Indians in 1690. 4 children
viii.  Sarah (2) Cloyes was born about 1653.

Sarah - married Peter Housing.

4. John Cloyes IV - was born on 26 Aug 1638 in Waterton, Mass and died in 1713 in Wells, Maine . He was the son of John Cloyes III and Abigail Mournings.
John married Mary Mills. She is the daughter of Thomas Mills and Mary Wadleigh.

Mary - her sister Sarah Mills married Nathaniel Cloyes.

John - Was the captain of a coasting vessel from Boston to Maine in 1663. Granted 150 acres next to his bro. Nathaniel Cloyes in 1681.

i.  Abigail Cloyes was born about 1672 in Watertown, MA and died after 1746 .
Abigail married John Cousins on 6 Apr 1704 in Wells, Maine. John was born about 1679 in Wells, Maine. He was the son of Thomas Cousins and Hannah Ward. He died before 11 May 1715 in Wells, Maine .

5. Nathaniel Cloyes - was born on 6 Mar 1642/1643 in Watertown, MASS and died after 1722 in Wells New York . He was the son of John Cloyes III and Abigail Mournings.
Nathaniel married Sarah Mills. She is the daughter of Thomas Mills and Mary Wadleigh.

Nathaniel - After the close of the war in 1768 a grant of land was made to Nathaniel. He owned a lot in Wells, Maine in 1672 and served on juries in Wells in 1680, 1688 and 1689. Joined the church at Wells Maine in 1701.

i.  Mercy Cloyes was born in 1680 in Charlestown, Mass and died before 1709 .
Mercy married Joseph Littlefield Apr 1706 in Wells, York Co., Maine. Joseph was born about 1688 in Wells, York Co., Maine. He is the son of Joseph Littlefield and Jane Cole.

ii.  Susannah Cloyes was born in 1685 in Charleston, Mass and died after 1721 in Wells, York Co., Me .
Susannah married Caleb Kimball II on 15 Jun 1704 in Wells, York Co., Me. Caleb was born about 1673/1674 in Ipswich, Essex Co., , Ma, USA. He is the son of Caleb Kimball I.

iii.  Sarah (1) Cloyes was born about 1697.
iv.  Sarah Cloyes was born in 1683 and died on 1 Feb 1693/1694 in Charlestown, Mass .
v.  Sarah (2) Cloyes was born in 1701.
vi.  Joseph Cloyes was born after 1711.

Joseph - Roll of English Prisoners in the hands of the French and Indians in Canada ... Joseph Cloyes of Wells, believed to be son of Nathaniel or John. "Taken from Lt. Johns at Newfoundland and such others whose names I could not come at. signed Dudley" Son of Nathaniel or John Cloyes?
